I found this article in The Kansas City Star recently on the Opinion page. It struck a cord that reminded me of how easily we can all forget the past. The writer, CONNIE LYNNE CARRILLO, shares the following:
- So, for what it's worth, let it begin with me. Recently, my pride at discovering my Southern ancestor was a Revolutionary War hero quickly turned to shame when I saw his slaves listed as "property" on his 1790 census record. And so, to all African-Americans, for any evils my family inflicted on any of your families: Please accept my heartfelt public apology.
I too have been uncovering the same history in my own family.
And I too wish to say to all African-Americans, for any evils my family inflicted on any of your families: Please accept my heartfelt public apology as well.
Each step we take makes for a country that may one day find a way to heal. If we are to clebrate our freedom as a counrty, that healing MUST be a part of our dream and our freedom.
